Sabiri's The Crying of Tanbur is set during the little-known civil war which began in Tajikistan after the collapse of the Soviet Union. This film explores a young boy's loss of childhood as he is caught up in the horror of war and in his own fears.

Both the film and the filmmaker are examples of how children of Tajikistan's civil war have searched for belonging, often crossing borders, and sometimes returning home.

Light refreshments will be served.

This series broadly explores the desire to strengthen political and cultural borders and the efforts to demarcate who deserves belonging and political rights within the historical and present European context. Yet like the topic of  “Borders and Belonging” this series extends beyond the European context and includes how European cultures are embracing and evolving with respect to migration from Central Asia, North and Western Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. This series is sponsored by UCI Humanities Center and European Languages and Studies.
